WikiScholar Update

Published on May 10, 2012 by in Uncategorized

Steve Joordens here,

I am teaching a brand new course this summer called WikiScholar.  It’s a very different kind of course; one in which the students decide the topics.  The idea is that you would work in groups to create Wikipedia pages related to Psych Content … full articles this time.  You decide on the issues you work on, and you work closely with a TA who will help you choose topics, get relevant background research, and who will comment on your article as it gets built.  After doing 4 group projects of that sort (4 or so students per group) you’ll do one on your own … and that will be it … no exams, just creating Wikipedia pages.

This course was intended for those just finishing their first year, and we wanted high performing students … but we had much fewer apply then we expected, and some were upper year students.  So I wanted to promote the course to all of you and say that we’re relaxing the GPA level mentioned in the course description … if you have anything higher than a 2.7 and you think the course sounds interesting, please consider it.  Note that you will have to attend classes though, so it only works for people who will be around.

I have no idea how many more might register after reading this message.  It could be that you register and then I ultimately can’t let you in to the course.  If so, sorry about that!  It will be an interesting experience, and don’t let lack of Wikipedia knowledge concern you … we’ll teach you what you need to know.

Looking forward seeing you in the course!

Brain Day Update

Published on March 31, 2012 by in Uncategorized
Thank you for presenting Brain Day at schools across the GTA during the Brain Awareness Week / Month (March).  As the semester comes to an end, we do have some housekeeping issues to address in this Brain Day Final Update:
A) What do I do with this blue Brain Day bag and its leftover contents?!  Brain Day Package Drop-off
- This year, if you fail to return the package during the drop-off times, your reference letter will not be sent to you!
- REMEMBER to sign in your name and your partner’s when you come to drop off the package, in case we miss it when we double check.  Do NOT take the labels off the bag so that we know who returned the bag.
- What if there is nothing left in my bag?  Please return the bag anyway as we do recycle them from year to year.
There will be no additional timings available since the semester ends next week.
- Times are scheduled for the upcoming week, as follows:
Monday, April 2… 3 – 6 PM
Tuesday, April 3… 3 – 5 PM
Thursday, April 5… 3 – 6 PM

B) What do I get from doing all this work?  Reference Letters
- Letters will be e-mailed to you.
- NO certificates will be provided BUT the reference letter will be on PNDA letterhead.
- If you need a position-specific letter, you need to e-mail us minimum 1 week in advance.  However, please be aware that since we did not have much personal interactions with most of you, a personalized letter will likely depend on the feedback provided by your teacher-host, and not all teachers have submitted their feedback.
C) What about volunteer hours for VNP? If you are part of the VNP and need to log volunteer hours, please e-mail us.  As per VNP policy, you can only log in hours after you registered with VNP so make sure that your Brain Day presentation date was after you signed up with them.
D) Why can’t I coordinate this fantastic, amazing and exciting program?  Brain Day Team Recruitment Process
- We have been asked this question several times already so we have decided to make a formal application process for the Brain Day Team that will be organizing Brain Day 2013.
- Number of available positions:  2
- Application process:  E-mail us to request an application form, fill it out by May 31, submit it, wait patiently
- Depending on number and quality of applications, we may choose to hold an interview
E) What if I really, really, really need to talk to you after the semester ends?  E-mail Responses during April – September
- If the e-mail response rate after April 4 could be shown here in a graphical format, it would mimic the last phase of bacterial growth.  Hint:  this phase is commonly referred to as the “death phase.”
- Therefore, please get in your questions / concerns / comments in to us before the end of term.
- If you do need to contact us urgently between April – August, I suggest you CC utscpnda@gmail.com (the official PNDA e-mail) to increase your chances of receiving a quicker response.
- If it’s not too urgent, then please give us a week or two before sending us another e-mail with a CC to utscpnda@gmail.com.
It has been a great experience working with all of you, and we hope to see you again for Brain Day 2013.  Good luck with your finals!
The Brain Day Team
